Comparative Cytomorphometric Study of Exfoliated Oral Epithelial Cells from a Population of Smokers, Tobacco Users and Gutkha Chewers

Introduction: Tobacco remains one of the most important preventable cause addiction, sickness and mortality in world as it affects oral epithelium. Normal epithelium undergoes continuous exfoliation or shedding its superficial cells, is replenished by new crop cells from basal layer. The rationale exfoliative cytology lies epithelial physiology. purpose this study to conduct quantitative cytomorphometric studies on squames obtained a population Gutkha users, assess changes Nuclear Area (NA) Cytoplasmic (CA) tobacco smokers, chewers, gutkha compare results with control group normal healthy individuals among themselves. Methods: Oral smears were taken buccal mucosa total 200 individuals. histochemically stained cytomorphological assessment was done. Groups compared way analysis variance (ANOVA) significance mean difference between groups done Tukey’s post hoc test after ascertaining normality Shapiro-Wilk andhomogeneity variances Levene’s test. Results: area chewer (C) highest individual (N) least. chewer(C) Conclusions: This supports extends view that evaluation keratinocytes can serve useful diagnostic adjunct for early detection cancer.
